Sumter - The Gamecock City
The city of Sumter is the seat of Sumter County and is located in the heart of the state, approximately 45 miles from Columbia, the state capitol. Incorporated in 1845, Sumter was named after General Thomas Sumter, the "Fighting Gamecock" of the American Revolutionary War.
Once a quiet agricultural community, Sumter was catapulted into the future with the installation of Shaw Air Force Base, or Shaw Field, as it was known in the beginning, in 1941. Today, the city is diverse and expanding in the manufacturing and biotech industries, and home to one of the largest health care systems in the state. Sumter is home to more than 100 community groups and clubs offering a wide range of interests in sports, arts, environmental preservation and more.
Living in Sumter means belonging to a vibrant community that really does have something for everyone. Many residents enjoy living in our family-oriented neighborhoods with excellent parks, while others prefer the calm serenity of a home in the country. Whether you are a newcomer to the area or have lived here all of your life the following links are provided to show all that Sumter has to offer.
Whether looking for quiet solitude or active fun with family and friends - Sumter has it all. For those Olympians-in-training, there’s the Sumter Aquatic Center, a public facility with a competition-sized pool, and the Palmetto Tennis Center, which offers, free of charge, 24 courts for those working on their serves and backhands. Whether walking the tree-lined streets of downtown or its various parks, Sumter offers the shade and tranquility perfect for a Sunday stroll. While still industrialized, Sumter has a soft side for the finer things in life. The arts are a rich part of Sumter’s identity, with the annual Arts Festival showcasing works from local artists. Sumter’s Opera House is probably one of our best-known landmarks. With its towering 100-foot clock tower, the Opera House is a legend in its own right. Sumterites know how to let their hair down too. At the Sumter@Six performances, attendees can hear nationally known bands from the area, such as The Tams or The Headliners, enjoy taste-testing local vendors and do the official state dance, the shag, all night long. You can also come downtown to catch a movie at the Sumter House of Movies. With all this to choose from, it’s no wonder Sumter is a part of the state whose slogan is “smiling faces, beautiful places.”
